It reached its peak a long time ago, and it has been sinking into the lagoon ever since. Venice can be breathtaking and heartbreaking at the same time. Still, it is a magnificent town, and it's the one place in Italy where you can't get lost. Rush hour traffic in the canals is something to behold, as are the pigeons in St. Mark's Square—they'll eat right out of your hand.
